Although sizes and strengths can vary wildly, in the United States, one standard drink is intended to contain about 0.6 fluid ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. Below are the most typical standard drink sizes for popular beverages.
Our standard drink calculator uses standard guidelines provided by US health organizations to estimate alcohol consumption. By combining the volume of liquid with its strength (Alcohol by Volume), you can determine exactly how many standard units you are consuming.
Pure Alcohol Volume: Drink Volume (oz) × (ABV% / 100)Standard Drinks: Pure Alcohol Volume (oz) / 0.6 ozAlcohol Grams: Standard Drinks × 14 gramsAlcohol Calories: Alcohol Grams × 7 kcalThese formulas are standardized across the US. Note that other countries have different definitions. For example, the UK defines a single unit of alcohol as 8 grams (10ml) of pure alcohol.
Alcohol itself is very calorie-dense. While carbohydrates and proteins provide 4 calories per gram, and fats provide 9 calories per gram, pure ethanol provides 7 calories per gram.
Therefore, a single standard drink (which has 14 grams of alcohol) brings around 98 calories from the alcohol alone. When you calculate beverage calories, remember that our calculator only indicates the calories from alcohol. Sugars and other carbs in the drink are in addition to this number.
