Understanding the Sine Function
The sine function is a fundamental pillar of trigonometry, linking the angles of a triangle to the lengths of its sides, and describing cyclic waves in nature.
Right Triangles (SOH)
If you have a right triangle (one angle is 90 degrees), you can find the sine of either of the other two angles by taking the length of the side completely opposite that angle, and dividing it by the length of the longest side (the hypotenuse).
sin(θ) = opp / hyp
The Unit Circle
Imagine a circle graphed on an X-Y plane with a radius of exactly 1. If you draw a line from the center out to the edge at a specific angle (θ), the sine of that angle is simply the Y-coordinate of where that line hits the circle's edge.
y = sin(θ)
