Our stud calculator uses professional framing standards and building code requirements to calculate accurate material quantities for wall framing. The calculation accounts for wall dimensions, stud spacing (on-center), door and window openings, and automatically includes king studs, jack studs, cripple studs, and double top plates per standard construction practices.
Vertical Studs = (Wall Length in inches ÷ Spacing) + 1Header Studs = (Doors + Windows) × 4Cripple Studs = Windows × 3Plates = 2 Top + 1 Bottom = 3 totalTotal Cost = (Studs × Cost) + (Plates × Cost)These formulas calculate wall studs based on on-center spacing, which is measured from the center of one stud to the center of the next. Each door and window requires 4 additional studs (2 king studs and 2 jack studs). Windows also need cripple studs above and below the opening. Standard walls include a double top plate and single bottom plate.

Professional wall framing follows specific standards for structural integrity and code compliance. Studs are typically spaced 16 inches on center for load-bearing walls, with 24 inches allowed for some non-load bearing applications. All walls require double top plates to tie walls together and distribute loads. Door and window openings need proper headers supported by king and jack studs.
