We first compute annual commute miles from your one-way distance, whether the pattern is doubled for a round trip, and how many days per year you make that trip. The gasoline baseline uses MPG and kg CO₂ per gallon to get kg CO₂ per mile, then annual kg CO₂e. The alternative mode uses mode-specific rules: zero operational tailpipe for bike/walk, user transit kg per round trip, EV kWh per mile times grid intensity, or proportional split for carpool.
annual_miles = daily_miles × workdayskg_CO2e_per_mi = kg_CO2_per_gallon ÷ MPGannual_kg_baseline = annual_miles × kg_CO2e_per_miAnnual gas cost is gallons × $/gal, where gallons = annual miles ÷ MPG.
Same route, different mode — compare operational footprints
Switching the same commute pattern from solo gasoline to bike removes tailpipe emissions for those miles in this model and shows gasoline money not spent on fuel for that commute.
Tonnes avoided: 1.7 t CO₂e per year (defaults shown).
