Common Ballistic Energy Benchmarks

How does your calculated energy compare to standard factory ammunition? Here are average benchmarks for popular cartridges fired from standard barrel lengths.

Rimfire

  • .22 LR~130 ft-lbs
  • .17 HMR~245 ft-lbs
  • .22 WMR~320 ft-lbs

Handgun

  • .380 ACP~200 ft-lbs
  • 9x19mm~360 ft-lbs
  • .45 ACP~400 ft-lbs

Magnum

  • .357 Mag~550 ft-lbs
  • .44 Mag~950 ft-lbs
  • .300 BLK~1,300 ft-lbs

Big Game

  • 5.56x45mm~1,250 ft-lbs
  • .308 Win~2,600 ft-lbs
  • .300 Win Mag~3,800 ft-lbs

Velocity is King

When looking at the formula for kinetic energy (E = ½mv²), one variable profoundly dominates the outcome: Velocity.

Because velocity is squared, slight increases in speed yield massive increases in total energy. For example, if you take a 100-grain bullet and double its weight to 200 grains, the energy exactly doubles.

However, if you take that same 100-grain bullet and double its velocity from 1,000 fps to 2,000 fps, its total kinetic energy doesn't double—it quadruples from roughly 222 ft-lbs to 888 ft-lbs. This physical reality is why lightweight, hyper-velocity rifle rounds (.223 Rem, .22-250) can produce devastating terminal effects that rival slow, extremely heavy projectiles (.45-70 Govt).
