8 × 4 ft bed, 3 in mulch, 10% wastage, 2 cu ft bags:
8.80 cu ft (5 bags)
The calculator finds the volume of a rectangular prism for your bed: length times width times depth in feet. Depth is converted from inches to feet by dividing by twelve. Wastage scales the result upward. Bag count divides total cubic feet by your bag’s stated cubic feet and rounds up to a whole number of bags.
cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27Net volume before wastage is 8 × 4 × (3/12) = 8.0 cu ft. With 10% wastage, material need rises to about 8.80 cu ft before rounding to bags.
