How to Convert Pounds to Ounces?

Converting pounds to ounces is straightforward. The basic formula is:

Conversion Formula

Ounces = Pounds × 16

For example: 2 pounds × 16 = 32 ounces

How to Convert Ounces to Pounds?

Converting ounces to pounds is equally simple:

Conversion Formula

Pounds = Ounces ÷ 16

For example: 32 ounces ÷ 16 = 2 pounds

Convert Grams to Pounds and Ounces

The calculator also converts grams to pounds and ounces. Here's how it works:

Conversion Steps

  1. Convert grams to ounces: Ounces = Grams ÷ 28.3495
  2. Convert ounces to pounds and ounces: Divide by 16 to get pounds, remainder is ounces

For example: 1000 grams = 35.274 ounces = 2 pounds 3.274 ounces

Add Up Pounds and Ounces Calculator

The bottom part of the tool is an add up pounds and ounces calculator. Here, you can enter two masses expressed in different units and get the sum in yet another unit. For example, if you'd like to add 3 pounds to 33 ounces:

Example Calculation

3 lb + 33 oz = ?
33 ÷ 16 = 2 remainder 1
33 oz = 2 lb 1 oz
3 lb + 2 lb 1 oz = 5 lb 1 oz

If you need to subtract a value, type the negative sign before the value you want to subtract. That works here, too!

Understanding Weight Units

It's important to understand the different weight units:

Avoirdupois System

The standard system used in the US and UK for everyday weight measurements. 1 pound = 16 ounces, and 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams. This is what our calculator uses by default.

Troy System

Used for precious metals. 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces, and 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. Our calculator supports troy ounces in the imperial equivalents section.

Metric System

Based on grams and kilograms. 1 kilogram = 1000 grams = 2.20462 pounds. Our calculator supports all standard metric weight units.

British Imperial

Includes stones (14 pounds), grains, and drachms. 1 stone = 14 pounds = 224 ounces. Commonly used in the UK for body weight.
